Imagining Humane Tech
Art as a medium for fostering public imagination about emerging technologies.
A human-centric techno-future cannot be created without engaging people.
And people are humans.
The development of our techno-social infrastructure is rapidly reshaping the lives of millions, who are often miles away from the topic-domains that engineer their choices, identities and security. What’s needed to effect representative change is a bridge connecting the worlds of research and public conversations - through emotionally engaging mediums.
Building on my cross-disciplinary experience in journalism, digital communications and non-profit entrepreneurhsip across Hong Kong and Germany, I aim to connect the worlds of academic research, literacy education and popular art with my work at Techthics.
My Purpose
A human-centric techno-future cannot be created without immersive participation of the public in the process.
There are no lack of visionaries in lecture halls and industry conferences. What’s direly needed to effect representative change is a vibrant bridge connecting worlds of research and cross-cultural public conversations. Despite growing discussions within the circles of technologists, researchers and policymakers, the fast-evolving techno-social infrastructure that is rapidly reshaping the choices, identities and security of billions of people are still often developed, adopted and scaled without inclusive engagement and debates involving the broader public, including minority communities.
This is partly due to the understandable challenges of channeling intellectual research into the dailylife conversations of the many - without flattening the information - while also absorbing the bottom-up, diverse perspectives from societies to help prevent unintended harms of new technologies.
I aspire to be a ‘research-storyteller’ that may help to bring the two worlds a bit closer.
I try to do so by blending my journalism, academic research and digital storytelling skills that I’ve developed from over a decade of inter-disciplinary experience, spanning from being a breaking news curator at Reuters News in Hong Kong, a digital communications specialist on smart cities technologies in Germany, a co-founder of a blockchain-for-social-good research non-profit association, and a graduate student of technology policy.
